Flu vaccine availability

We want to repudiate the implications in some of this week’s news headlines, such as ”Now GPs delay flu jabs for Brits aged 50 to 64 …” .

GPs are not responsible for the delay in vaccinating this age group, they are following a rational, sensible approach to ensure the highest risk patients are prioritised to help protect both the most vulnerable and NHS resources through the winter season.

The Facts

Vaccine orders were placed and delivery schedules agreed before the Covid crisis was recognised.

Prioritising those in greatest need means people over the age of 65, people under 65 with long term health problems, pregnant women and young children.

The new group of people that we want to vaccinate as a consequence of the Covid crisis, which is mostly people between the ages of 50 and 64, will have their vaccinations delayed until supplies are available and the highest risk patients have been seen.

It is still to be confirmed who will be responsble for vaccinating this group and when the vaccine will be available. As soon as we know, we will share the information and our plans with you.

Our GPs and nurses are working hard to clear the backlog of health reviews that accumulated over the past months in addition to working extra days to ensure we run as many flu clinics as possible.

Although seeing fewer patients face to face during lockdown, we were still busy.

Flu vaccine

Following the recent government announcement, that all people between the ages of 50 and 65 are entitled to a flu vaccination, we are pleased to announce the first of two additional flu clinics.
The first clinic is scheduled for Saturday 12th December. The second clinic will be early January, date to be confirmed.

These clinics are primarily for patients aged 50 to under 65 (on 31st March 2021) who are considered to be ‘clinically NOT at risk’. If you are in this age group and have not previously received an invitation for a flu vaccination from us, you now qualify for the vaccination.

Vaccine type

Visit the NHS flu web page for more information.

Different patient groups receive different vaccines. For patients in the 50 to 65 age group who are not clinically at risk, the Department of Health and Social Security and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MRHA) have authorised the temporary supply of the Flublok vaccine. Flublok is licenced for use in the USA by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
